New GE Policy on Ethnic Studies
In August 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law which requires a 3-unit course in Ethnic Studies for all California State University (CSU) undergraduates by the 2024-2025 academic year. In response, the Chancellor’s Office (CO) recently issued a . It stipulates that a new 3-unit lower division course will now be required in Ethnic Studies. This course is to be within a new GE category (category F), with a subsequent reduction of 3 units in the current Area D of GE. Our É«ÖÐÉ« GE policy will now need to be revised by the Academic Senate to incorporate these new changes. We anticipate this discussion will occur during the Spring term as these new requirements go into effect for students freshpeople entering in Fall 2021. Our CHHS Chairs/Directors, Academic Senators, Program Coordinators, and the CHHS Advising team have already been active in analyzing how this change will impact our CHHS programs. For some majors, this modification will require a change in major required course(s). Our CHHS Advising team is well versed in our unique undergraduate programs and these specific impacts. Should you have questions about how students in your program will navigate this new requirement, please reach out to me, Jennifer Ostergren, or our advising director, Raven Yoshitomi. We would be happy to get you additional details specific to your program and students.
