Sex Workers and Theater of the Oppressed

What can theater accomplish that a court ruling alone cannot?

India鈥檚 landmark Prajwala judgment draws an essential line: sex work is not human trafficking. Yet legal recognition only matters when people can understand, claim, and put their rights into practice.

Please join myself and my CLA colleagues Kavitha Koshy and Aparna Nayak for Rehearsing Rights: Sex Workers and Theater of the Oppressed, a timely conversation with three activists whose organizations are using participatory theater to turn legal rights into lived change for sex workers in India.

Drawing on Augusto Boal鈥檚 Theater of the Oppressed, our speakers will discuss how performance can help communities confront violence, challenge entrenched power, and rehearse different possibilities for justice:

  • Girija Hariharan, Artist and Theater of the Oppressed practitioner, Haan, Hum
  • Ratna Kumari, President, Me and My World
  • Meera Raghavendra, Director, Women鈥檚 Initiatives
