Akira Kumamoto

Akira Olivia Kumamoto is a digital content professional and creative writer with a decade of experience in social-first storytelling. She specializes in social media optimization and adapting journalism for digital platforms. Akira currently works as a social producer on the digital audience team at The Associated Press. Throughout her career, she has contributed to USA Today, McClatchy, Snapchat, BuzzFeed, Brainjolt, and NBCUniversal’s Today. Her writing has also appeared in Catapult Magazine, and she freelances for the Japanese American publication Nichi Bei.

Akira holds a Master of Journalism from UC Berkeley (’17). She is proud of her Japanese American and Mexican American heritage and draws on her multiracial background to inform her reporting. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and with her two cats.
