Joshua Cotter

Joshua Cotter, Ph.D., is an associate professor of exercise physiology in the Department of Kinesiology at Cal State Long Beach. He is also the founder and co-director of the Physiology of Exercise and Sport (PEXS) Lab, where he researches how the regulation of skeletal muscle mass affects health outcomes and sport performance.

Cotter’s general interests include the optimization of training programs and nutritional support for strength and hypertrophy, exercise countermeasures for spaceflight, the biology of the myogenic satellite cell, biomechanics of the knee joint, and ergogenic aids for sports performance.

Cotter holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Health and Exercise Science and a Master of Science in Health and Exercise Science from The Ohio State University. He completed a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Irvine, where he conducted research in the Multidisciplinary Exercise Science Training Program, studying the cellular and molecular responses to exercise training.
