To celebrate Black History Month is to celebrate the good and the great in America. It is a time to recognize achievements, leaders and events that shaped a nation and a people. And it is a time to remember the tragedies, continue fighting for equality and justice, and remain committed to keeping our 鈥渆yes on the prize.鈥 So, why do we celebrate this special month? Dear Campus Community:  Prior to the pandemic in spring 2020, each active student, staff, and faculty was asked to participate in campus-wide surveys to explore our current climate. This effort provided a brief snapshot to help us collectively identify issues and find aspirational solutions to create a more inclusive environment for all.  Several university committees worked together to co-author a comprehensive report reflective of the survey鈥檚 findings. Dear Beach Community: It is a time of great uncertainty as we prepare for the coming U.S. Supreme Court decision on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). And, it is an especially challenging time for those members of our campus and community whom are most directly affected. While DACA has made it possible for many undocumented students to pursue their educational dreams, it is also beyond dispute that these individuals have made important and lasting contributions on our campus,鈥

Honoring our Native American alumni and students

Our university has many singular strengths but perhaps most unique are the influences that arose from our location on a portion of Puvungna, an ancient site of learning that represents a sacred space to our Native American neighbors and to others in the community. As we enter the season of thanksgiving, it is a particularly appropriate time to remember the Tongva people and all First Americans who, in the words of former President Barack Obama, 鈥渉ave helped shape the future of the United鈥
