ADA Title II and You, April 2026

Published April 10, 2026

Progress Over Perfection

As we enter into these final weeks before the update goes into effect, we have made significant progress. In less than two years, É«ÖÐÉ« has:

  • Launched a .
  • Created a centralized landing page for campus accessibility services.
  • Implemented unlimited for campus content.
  • Provided monthly training sessions and recordings, including with special guest speaker, , Shawn Jordison.
  • Remediated, archived or deleted 80% of documents in our Drupal environment or identified valid exceptions under the ADA update.
  • Expanded visibility to the form.
  • Increased staffing support, including student assistants and specialists in instructional design.
  • Sent 70+ communications to campus via newsletters, emails, Canvas announcements, and social media.

The ADA Title II update sets full compliance as the expectation but reaching that standard requires shared responsibility. Accessibility is our collective responsibility.

What You Can Do Now

If you create or publish content, including course materials, you are responsible for ensuring it meets basic accessibility standards. This includes passing accessibility checks (such as Acrobat, Word, or ), using proper tag structure, adding alt text, and ensuring sufficient color contrast.

For faculty using Canvas, running TidyUp and remediating UDOIT's "" are important first step to take before the April 24 Title II deadline. Find detailed step-by-step course remediation guidelines at Accessible Course Design.

Support is available! Our can assist with documents and videos, and BMAC services support students with ongoing accommodation needs. Small actions make a meaningful difference.

We will continue to document our progress and improvements to demonstrate a strong, campus wide commitment to accessibility. This supports our community and shows good faith effort.

Remediation Resources

Remediation work is a journey that requires learning new skills to meet the ongoing requirements of Title II. The concepts for creating accessible content across platforms such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, PDF, and Canvas are universal.

Using frameworks such as VITALS and HELPS provide guidance on what items need to be reviewed to make documents, websites, videos and audio accessible.

Visit Accessibility Tools for more resources to help with remediation.

Social Media Accessibility Matters

Social media is an essential way we communicate with our campus community. Under ADA Title II, we are responsible for ensuring that content we share is accessible to everyone.

Before you post, take a moment to check:

  • Are videos captioned? Captions ensure access for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and for anyone viewing without sound.
  • Did you add alt text? Describe images so screen reader users can access the content.
  • Is your text clear and readable? Avoid jargon, limit acronyms, and use plain language.
  • Capitalize each word in hashtags (e.g., #GoBeachDay) so they’re easier to read.
  • Is key information easy to find? Place important details at the beginning of your post.

These steps make a meaningful difference and help ensure equitable access to the campus community.
