Abstract

In the field of modeling education, frameworks for teacher interventions are modeling process contingent and lack explicit connections to student reasoning. While educational research has documented the benefits of cognitively responsive teaching, the field of modeling education has yet to articulate what this looks like in this domain. Thus, we asked, what does cognitively contingent scaffolding in modelling look like? In this talk, we share the conceptual, methodological, and analytical strategies we undertook to address this question.

Sindura Kularajan

Sindura Kularajan is an assistant professor at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University. She studies the interplay between quantitative reasoning and students’ creation of mathematical models from first principles from a cognitive constructivist perspective. She also works with teachers to explore the competencies required for teaching mathematical modeling at the K-12 level.

About the Colloquium

The Mathematics Colloquium is a unique opportunity for students to learn about new developments in mathematics and what mathematics and statisticians do after they graduate. Hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Long Beach, the weekly meetings invite guests from universities, research laboratories, and industry to present and discuss current topics in mathematics. All students are encouraged to attend.
